Why Is My Water Rusty or Brown in NYC?
Rusty or discolored water is a common problem in NYC, especially in older buildings. The most common causes include: corroded galvanized steel or iron water mains, deteriorating lead water service lines, city water main flushing or repairs in your area, internal plumbing corrosion, and sediment disturbance from nearby construction. If the discoloration is consistent (happens every time you turn on the water), the problem is likely your water service line. If it is intermittent, it may be a city-side issue. Either way, rusty water should be investigated promptly — it can indicate pipe failure is imminent.
